Materials We Use

This page describes the materials and construction methods we use. Each model's own details are in the Materials and Manufacturing sections on its product page.

Lining and insole

Every style is fully leather-lined: the inside of the shoe is leather from end to end.

The insole is leather too, and padded in most styles.

Upper leathers

The upper is the top part of the shoe. We use these leathers:

Calf leather: in most of our styles.
Suede calf: a matte, velvety surface.
Patent leather: leather with a glossy finish, used in evening styles such as Tolima.
Buffalo and deer leather: in a few styles, sometimes combined with calf.
Patterned calf: calf leather with a croc or geometric pattern applied to it.
Woven calf: in styles whose upper is woven from leather strips.

A few styles combine leather with fabrics such as velvet or satin.

Colors of the same model can be made from different leathers. If you'd like to know the leather of a particular color, email us.

Outsoles and heels

Most of our styles have leather soles; some have a double leather sole.

Some styles use EVA, microlight or rubber soles, in some cases combined with leather.

Most leather-soled styles have a half rubber heel cap.

Construction methods

Blake-stitched: most of our styles are made this way. A single row of stitching joins the sole, upper and insole. The shoe is flexible and light, and the sole is trimmed close to the upper.

Cemented: the sole is bonded to the upper without stitching.

Side-wall stitched: the sole is stitched to the upper from the side. A few of our styles are made this way.

Resoling

Most of our Blake-stitched styles can be resoled by a cobbler with a Blake machine. Cemented and side-wall stitched styles aren't built to be resoled.
